Resources for the Early Years
We have programs specifically designed to help parents and families of children before they attend kindergarten. Whether your child has a disability or special healthcare needs, or if you are just concerned, look through the programs below to see how FIRSTwnc can meet your needs.
Early Intervention Services
Through the Children Developmental Services Agency, FIRSTwnc bills Medicaid for Community Based Rehabilitative Services provided by early intervention specialists with expertise in developmental disabilities, autism, and social-emotional strategies for children from birth to age three. FIRSTwnc can provide this service to Spanish-speaking families. Our Early Intervention Services are available to children living in Buncombe County.
The PLAY Project: Autism Intervention
This research-based program trains parents to provide the American Association of Pediatrics recommendation of 25 hours per week of intensive interventions for their young child with autism. FIRSTwnc can bill Medicaid Direct through Vaya Health for this service for children with an ASD diagnosis. After participating in The PLAY Project, all parents improved their relationship-forming and two-way communication skills, while all children improved their behavioral organization skills.
The Sunshine Project
This preschool inclusion program, funded by the Buncombe Partnership for Children, provides interventions to childcare center staff and parents of children with disabilities or at risk of disabilities. FIRSTwnc childcare consultants work with more than 30 childcare centers in Buncombe County annually.
Community Parent Resource Center
FIRSTwnc has been funded as a CPRC by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education. This allows us to offer free training for parents on educational issues and parental rights.
FIRSTwnc clinicians support people with disabilities and their families to help meet their mental wellness needs. Our clinicians have expertise working with people of all ages and their families. They specialize in trauma-informed care, Theraplay, trauma play, child-centered play therapy, autism, and caregiver coaching.
