FIRST’s Full Circle Initiative will create a statewide movement across North Carolina for persons with IDD. Al Etmanski (2004) states that “the best guarantee of a safe and secure future for a person with a disability is the number of caring, committed friends, family members, acquaintances and supporters actively involved in their life”. Focusing on building connections within the community, people with IDD can enjoy the natural supports and interdependence people without disabilities utilize every day.
FIRST has partnered with the ABCD Institute of DePaul University and PLAN Institute, a Canadian organization supporting the work of Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network (PLAN), a family-led charitable organization dedicated to building inclusive communities for all citizens, Founded in 1989 by parents, including Etmanski, author of A Good Life, who wanted to ensure their children could live a good life and contribute to their communities. While the founders were initially focused on their own children, the five components they used to define a good life are universal: loving friends and family, a home of one’s own, financial security, participating in decision making and the ability to contribute their unique gifts.
