Peer Centered First
IDD Peer to Peer Mentoring

Building connections. Empowering voices. Creating change.
Peer Centered First is a new pilot program from FIRSTwnc that trains and employs adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) as peer mentors. Through shared experience, mentors help others with IDD build confidence, develop life skills, improve wellness, and find meaningful inclusion in their communities.
This innovative program was co-designed with Centered Resources and IDD peers, using a customized curriculum that aligns with North Carolina’s Medicaid-recognized peer support standards for mental health. By adapting that model for the IDD community, Firstwnc is creating a sustainable, peer-led system of support that reduces isolation, shortens waitlists for therapy, and promotes long-term well-being.
Peer Centered First also creates paid internships and leadership opportunities for people with IDD—helping them gain employment experience while supporting others on their journey toward independence and self-determination.
Together, we’re proving that peer mentoring isn’t just powerful—it’s essential.
