Lars Johnson

Supported Living Director

Lars, originally from Georgia, moved to North Carolina in 1990 to go to college. He spent two summers working at a camp for children and adults with autism and that began his career with working with special needs populations. His experiences range from being a paraprofessional in classrooms for young children with severe disabilities to being a job coach for adults with disabilities. After completing his undergraduate degree from Western Carolina with a major in Special education, he became a Special Education teacher in Hendersonville and later Buncombe County. For the past 12 years, he was a behavior specialist and academic facilitator with Asheville City Schools. He also completed his graduate degree in Special Education from Western Carolina. He has served on numerous community advisory boards including the Family Support Network and the Asheville Therapeutic Park and Recreation as well as volunteering with the Make a Wish Foundation as a wish granter.

During all this time, Lars carried a dream within his heart. Lars has two cousins with Fragile X and has seen firsthand the need for housing and supportive living. His dream was to someday develop such a place for adults with disabilities where they could enjoy the broadest possible range of independence. Working with FIRST will help him achieve this dream.

Lars is married to Eileen, a physical therapist, has twin girls, and lives in Weaverville with his family and dog, Hank.
